Review: Merlin Bird ID by Cornell Lab of Ornithology

This app is amazing. I love that it listens, tracks the sounds, and then tells me what bird is chirping at that exact moment. Nice and easy to use. Very sensitive to sounds and can pick up very quiet birds. Can take a little while to pick multiple birds when there are a lot of them talking at one time.

Very addictive, plus I'm learning fast. So that's a blackcap song!! And, somewhere, nearby is a regular visitor - a bullfinch. Fabulous. Love this app. Follow their instructions on downloading the bird packs if you have any issues. I got my father, who is the type to think apps are only something served on trays with toothpicks to download it, and he loves it as much as I do. The sound ID feature is astounding for improving your song recognition, the life list feature is really fun. A must-have for any birder, and one of, if not the, best apps I've used ever. 10/10.

I had no idea there were 5 birds singing that I could hear from my porch while I had my coffee! Possibly the best-designed app of any kind I've ever used. I've had virtually no frustrations in setting up and using it, and the results are fun and fascinating. I like that I can quickly ID a bird, and if I want to know more, there's an array of information immediately available. This is tech at its best.

After watching The Big Year, I'm loving learning about all the birds we have in our neighborhood. What a great app. Just does what it is supposed to do so well! Amateur or serious bird watcher. Let's you know what you're seeing and hearing. So far so good. Been trying it for a few days in different locations, and identifying lots of different birds, sometimes all in one recording which is nice. I'm delighted to be able to start recognizing more bird songs because of the app, and I'm discovering more species around me.

Kust an idea. There are a lot of chips and chirps in the woods that SOUND like birds but aren't. Perhaps you could have a NOT a bird popup for chipmunks and squirrels.

Almost perfect, but I wish the recording audio would remind you that the location has to be enabled. Otherwise, you'll get nothing, even if the bird is recognizable. Also, I sometimes forget that the audio recording is on, and I would like if it turned itself off automatically after several minutes. The reminder isn't good enough. And my phone got really hot after 1 hour of recording.

Awesome app. I find myself hearing the birds more often as I go about my day after using the app! It's so fun. I used it at McDonald's and saw/heard a house sparrow! It's just neat to see which birds are around you. Using Sound ID it displays each bird heard, even almost inaudible ones. As the "stack" of birds accumulate on the phone screen, the birds still singing light up as they sing. Tapping on a bird takes you quickly to more information. Educational.

I absolutely love this app. I wake up, ready to hear and see the birds. I put the phone next to the window and just explore the sounds. I haven't seen an ad yet. A really wonderful app. It's only now I'm older that I appreciate the wildlife around me and for a complete amateur, it's wonderful to be able to understand what I'm listening to.
